The question on
most Burnley fans minds is whether or not Charlie Austin will be a member of
the squad following the January transfer window. Several teams have shown interest in the star
striker, and if Austin gets his way, he will be sticking around with the club
after January.
Several clubs
have sent scouting parties to look at the Clarets striker. Among the teams scouting Austin are Reading,
Liverpool, Everton, Aston Villa, and Arsenal.
Among those teams, Arsenal may be the most desperate at the moment as
they are looking for any advantage to challenge Premier League power Manchester
United for the title.
Arsenal is
sitting about middle of the pack in the Premier League and as each game passes,
the gap for them to make a run closes.
The Red Devils signed a sponsorship contract with bwin earlier in the year and look to make huge
moves to take the title and a move for Austin by Arsenal could be enough to
ignite their struggling offense.
Regardless of
which teams believe they need the striker, Austin is happy to remain a
Claret. He was recently quoted by
talkSPORT as saying, "I'm here to play for Burnley football club. I'm
enjoying my football at the moment and I long to stay here."
Former Claret Willie Irvine backs up the
sentiments of Austin saying that the team should ignore any attempts to sell
Austin's contract, especially considering the team posted a £3.16million annual profit recently.
There is a lot of fears concerning the
financial situation of the club and Irvine insists that investing in players
like Austin to help the club make a promotion push would make more financial
sense than trading players to balance the books. He believes that failure to make the club
competitive will result in continued losses at the gate as fewer fans have been
attending games as of late.
Irvin does indeed
have a point. It is difficult to
convince fans to back the team when they continually use their best players as
a way to keep the squad financially solvent.
At some point, the talent pool dries up and then you have both a team
that cannot compete and no way to raise funds to make it competitive. Hopefully Burnley will hold on to Austin and
make an effort to make a promotion push.
