There were two changes to the side than ran
out 3-0 victors to Wigan. Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson came in to
replace Andre Wisdom and Suso.
Early exchanges displayed fine passing from
both teams that deploy similar styles.
Pepe Reina smartly denied Wayne Routledge as
the first chance of the match fell to the hosts. The Spaniard tipped the
midfielder’s fiercely struck shot past his near post.
The visitors threatened in the 17th
minute. Glen Johnson curled an inviting cross in behind the Swansea back line,
Jose Enrique met it with his chest, but his effort skipped past the post.
The two were in tandem shortly again. This
time, Enrique turned provider and Johnson was sent through on goal. He looked
to sneak his effort under Gerhard Tremmel, but the ‘keeper kept out his effort
well.
Liverpool were enjoying much of the chances
as they grew into the game. Raheem Sterling was next to threaten to open the
scoring. The 17-year-old lashed a volley from the edge of the box that struck
off the cross bar in the 33rd minute. The crossbar, a familiar foe
for the Reds.
Next up, the influential Enrique thought he
had scored only for the offside flag to be raised against him. Suarez dinked a
ball towards the back post for the Spaniard to bundle in.
The half time whistle concluded an eventful
first half in Rodgers’ return to the Liberty stadium. Liverpool were unlucky
not to be in the lead, having hit the bar with Sterling and denied a goal when
Enrique strayed offside.
After the break, Luis Suarez was first to
test the resolve of Swansea. The Uruguayan’s low-drilled effort was deflected
away by Tremmel’s legs.
Chances were few and far between as the
second half progressed. The precedent set by the explosive, open and expansive
first 45 minutes was not matched.
A lapse in concentration by Downing
resulted in Dyer sneaking through on goal. Pepe Reina rushed out and contested
the loose ball, but the Spaniard came out second best as he took a boot to the
face. Thankfully, both players were unharmed and continued.
Sterling and Suarez broke two versus one
against Swansea. The former looked to play Suarez through, but the weighty pass
sent the Uruguayan wide. Determined to keep the move alive, Luis aimed to cut
inside and shoot, but Tremmel comfortably smothered his effort.
A tactical affair came to a subdued end.
Liverpool continue their unbeaten streak to 8 and move up to 11th on
16 points.
