5 reasons to be optimistic about Daniel Sturridge at Liverpool

Reports are rife Daniel Sturridge underwent a medical at Melwood ahead of his £12 million move to Liverpool from Chelsea. I’ve had quite a few people asking me my opinion of Daniel Sturridge, so in this article I’ll explore some reasons on why I think Liverpool fans should remain optimistic about the impending signing of the England international.

1. He scores goals.

Every single Liverpool fan can agree on the fact the squad lacks goals. It’s evident to see. A career tally of 38 goals in 140 games is an honest return considering Sturridge been largely deployed out wide. Throw in the fact he’s recently turned 23 and didn’t have consistent stints in the Chelsea side - it doesn’t look bad at all. His loan move to Bolton in January 2011 proved prosperous for the striker, a string of games with a prominent role in the side saw him net 8 times in 12 games, notching 4 goals in his first 4 appearances – becoming only the sixth person to achieve the feat in the Premier League. The signing of Daniel Sturridge would lift the weighty burden on Uruguayan Luis Suarez; a 10-15-goal season from the forward would make the difference between top 6 and top 4.

2. He’s a presence

The Liverpool front line lacks in the physical department. This was most notably highlighted in the goalless home draw against Stoke City in October. The young and inexperienced duo of Raheem Sterling and Suso were bullied throughout the game, limiting the supply to front man Luis Suarez, who himself was on the end of a few bullish tackles. Daniel Sturridge’s presence would go a long way in ‘dishing it back’ so to speak. Suarez, Sterling, Suso, Assaidi and Downing aren’t renown for their build in a league distinguished for its physicality. Not to mention having another threat from set pieces, only Martin Skrtel and Daniel Agger are taller first teamers.

3. He’s versatile

Daniel Sturridge has finely displayed how he can play either upfront as a sole striker or out wide in his time at Manchester City, Chelsea and Bolton. In terms of tactics, it’s a jigsaw fit for how Rodgers wants his team to set up.
“When you’ve got [Jose] Enrique and [Stewart] Downing on the left side they both get in each other’s way. Because he’s [Jose Enrique] a runner, he wants to work that space in front of him and on the inside. If Stewart Downing’s a winger he’s in his way, so for me you need someone who can play on the outside, but someone who’s comfortable on the inside, who can run in on goal and also leave that space for him to operate in.” Brendan Rodgers’ comments in a recent ‘fan-site’ interview.
Basically a wide forward, a player that’s comfortable on the outside, as well as on the inside. It helps create and score more goals, a distinct feature lacking from Liverpool’s play. Back to Sturridge, he’s exactly that. His eye for goal is coupled with his ability to hog the touchline if required to do so.

A perfect fit? On paper, it seems so.

4. He possesses pace and unpredictability

Apart from a select few players, the Liverpool squad as a whole lacks pace. The introduction of Daniel Sturridge would supply the front line with a couple of key attributes, most notably, speed. Counter attacks at times this season fizzled out, a player with quick feet as well as raw pace can trouble any defence in world football.

There are glimpses of unpredictability with Daniel Sturridge. He’s a player that could pull a rabbit out of a hat; make himself stand up and be counted. Cast your memories back to the opening minute of Chelsea’s home tie against Queens Park Rangers last season, a first time ferocious strike with his weaker right foot left Paddy Kenny with no chance. Scoring out of seemingly nothing.

Combined with the movement of Liverpool’s play, the pace and unpredictability of Daniel Sturridge has the potential to set Anfield alight.

5. Regular football = Goals

Like the majority of professional footballers, Sturridge requires regular football in order to keep his performances consistent and his goals tally healthy, something that has been starved of him thus far in his career. With the shortage of forwards at the club and the amount of games to contest he’ll be sure to get regular spells in the starting line up. I refer back to his loan spell at Bolton, he benefited from a run of games, scoring goals regularly.

Whether Daniel Sturridge signs or not, I think the touted fee of £12 million would be a good piece of business by Brendan Rodgers. He’ll get a player not only with massive potential, but a player that’s ready to take the goal-scoring burden off Luis Suarez. Some argue he’s greedy, but maybe that’s what we need. A decisive forward. One that’s not afraid to shoot. To take the responsibility and finally, score goals.

Just a poor man's Defoe. Except he costs 12m.
Greedy, defensively poor and a questionable attitude.
Big, big gamble from LFC.

He's a young lad n clearly ambitious. He fits our bill.perfectly. Don't have a go before he starts. I reckon he will blossom with us. Just watch.

well i hope rogers no,s what he,s doing, sturridge is one of the most selfish playes around.3 previous managers haven,t been able to put it right.if he starts ding the same at lfc then suarez wont put up with him and this may start trouble amoungst other team members.

I think he will indeed be a gamble but what isn't? He may be the boost that this team needs.
