Match Report | Liverpool 4-0 Fulham | 22/12/12

Stewart Downing notched his first goal and assist in the Premier League for Liverpool in a 4-0 victory over a lackluster Fulham side on Saturday evening. Martin Skrtel gave the hosts the lead early on, before Steven Gerrard made it 3-0 just before half time. Downing’s driving effort beat Mark Schwarzer on his near post before Luis Suarez capped off a dominant performance in stoppage time.

Jose Enrique returned after missing the Aston Villa defeat through injury. There was also a start for Spanish starlet Suso, his first since November’s victory against Wigan. Meanwhile, Joe Allen and Raheem Sterling were named amongst the substitutes bench. Lucas continued his return in midfield alongside Steven Gerrard and Jonjo Shelvey.

Jonjo Shelvey’s back heel forced a corner early on from Stewart Downing’s cross.

Steven Gerrard whipped in the set piece that found Martin Skrtel in space. The defender gathered the ball and unleashed a right-footed volley past Mark Schwarzer in the Fulham goal to give the hosts the lead in the 9th minute.

The visitors were abject and offered no threat in the opening exchanges. While Liverpool were slick with their passing and suffocating with their pressing.

Downing capitalised on the space offered to him and unleashed a venomous drive at goal. Schwarzer this time was equal to the effort and finger tipped it towards the side netting.

Passing around Fulham, the hosts set into their rhythm. Steven Gerrard’s deflected effort fell to Suarez fortuitously, unselfishly he squared for Daniel Agger to tap in from five yards out, but the defender’s effort horribly found the upper tier of the Anfield road end.

Steven Gerrard then made in 2-0 in the 35th minute. Threaded through eloquently by Downing, the skipper cut across the ball and found the far corner.

It was Stewart Downing’s first Premier League assist for the club since his arrival in the summer of 2011, amassing a span of 45 games.

Martin Jol sought to change his team’s fortunes with a change after the restart. Hugo Rodallega replaced former Liverpool youth forward Alexander Kačaniklić.

The hosts almost extended their lead in the 47th minute. Stewart Downing’s deflected cross found Suarez un-marked on the back post. However, the Uruguayan couldn’t divert his effort towards goal.

It wasn’t to matter as Downing minutes later reached another landmark on a rainy evening at Anfield. Cutting inside, the winger drove his effort past Schwarzer’s near post for his first Liverpool Premier League goal.

Soon after, through on goal Jonjo Shelvey was presented with an opportunity to extend Liverpool’s dominance. But the young midfielder’s shot was deflected over the goal.

Downing, an influential figure throughout the game, almost doubled his tally with a drive that just curled past the top corner. Performances like this would certainly improve his chances of staying at Liverpool through the January transfer window.

At a cleverly worked free kick, Glen Johnson flicked on for Steven Gerrard, but Mark Schwarzer was able to narrow the angle and deny the captain his second of the evening.

Going into stoppage time, Fulham’s evening wasn’t to be over just yet.

After a short corner, Jose Enrique slipped down the by-line before cutting back for Luis Suarez to end 2012 at Anfield with a high, making it 4-0.

Downing was maybe unlucky not to get 3!!!! Who would have thought? If he can ping thm in from distance, he will draw players and free up space for the rest of the team. I just hope all the players keep up the good work and we can start to be consistent
