Brendan Rodgers' reign so far

“It’s Liverpool’s worst start to a season in over 100 years.”
“They’re nothing without Luis Suarez.”
“They’ll be fortunate to make top half.”
Brendan Rodgers being appointed Liverpool manager was a decision which split the fans. Many saw it as a step forward, a young manager with a taste for pass and move football; something that Liverpool are distinctively known for. Others saw it as a mistake, claiming Swansea was his level and that the step up was too much, too soon. Now if you asked the same two sets of supporters, once divided in opinions; the outcome would likely be very different. Rodgers has taken to Liverpool like a duck takes to water. From day one he has understood the club; the tradition, the history, the supporters. Just little things like changing the nets at Anfield back to the red they used to be go a long way. It’s a far cry from the days of Hodgson, who controversially admitted he was worried that taking the Liverpool job would harm his relationship with Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson.

After enduring a poor start to the season - totting up a measly two points from the opening five games – things are starting to look up. A nine game league unbeaten run and twenty points from our last 11 games; a statistic only bettered by Manchester City (24) and Manchester United (27) - sits us in 10th position, a mere four points from a Champions League spot. It’s an achievement to be able to say that at this point in time. Having had one of our most influential players in Lucas Leiva out for a majority of the campaign, as well as having only one recognised first team striker on our books this term - just four points separate us from a top four spot. It could all be so different too, if only for a bit of luck. Of the sixteen league games we have played this season, not many would disagree that we were the better team in the majority, excluding WBA away and Arsenal at home. Controversial decisions including a wrongfully disallowed winner for Luis Suarez in the dying embers of the Merseyside Derby, as well as several stonewall penalties not given in our favour have also been detrimental to the clubs standing right now.

Some of the football we have displayed this year has been nothing short of magnificent, and if we had more clinical finishers we could easily occupy a Champions League spot now. Averaging 58% of the possession in the league whilst maintaining a passing accuracy of 84.9%, Rodgers is clearly starting to instil his own methods.  The football is appealing on the eye and the results are starting to flow; having topped our Europa League group also helps Rodgers’ reign. Since Brendan has been here, he has introduced several young players into the squad. Raheem Sterling has featured in all but one game in the league, whilst Suso and Andre Wisdom have also played a part in around half of our league fixtures. Our policy has been clear since the start of the transfer window: secure the services of promising young players in order to build for the future. In the summer, Joe Allen (22), Fabio Borini (21), Oussama Assaidi (24) and Samed Yesil (18) were all signed up by Rodgers in an attempt to start moulding the squad to his liking.

So with just one transfer window under his belt and a squad that still needs a lot of tuning; Brendan Rodgers has had a decent start as Liverpool manager. Of course, nothing is perfect – we are still failing to convert routine chances and at times we seem to pass without purpose. But remember, Alex Ferguson - one of the greatest British managers of all time (not the best, that’s our Bob) - was one game away from the sack, now look at United. Rodgers needs to be backed by FSG in order to implement his tactics to perfection. Having seen progress since Kenny Dalglish left the club in the summer, I believe supporters need to continue to get behind Brendan. A young manager with an eye for the game; I feel if we stick with him we won’t go far wrong.
“I will leave no stone unturned in my quest – and that quest will be relentless – to try and get Liverpool back on the map again as a successful football club.” - Brendan Rodgers
