Liverpool came from behind to recover a
point against Newcastle United at Anfield on Sunday afternoon. In Steven
Gerrard’s 600th club appearance, Yohan Cabaye gave the visitors a
first half lead before a piece of individual brilliance by Luis Suarez drew the
hosts level.
Brendan Rodgers named an unchanged
Liverpool side that drew at Goodison Park a week ago. Glen Johnson and Pepe
Reina, both recovering from injuries, were still absent from the team-sheet.
The hosts set the early tempo of the game;
exchanging quick passes, threatening in dangerous positions and restricting
Newcastle to chasing shadows.
Nuri Sahin and Raheem Sterling linked up
well in the box; the 17-year-old reached the byline and crossed for Suarez.
However, the Newcastle defence managed to scramble it behind for a corner.
Suarez, in the 20th minute, looked
to curl a free kick into the top corner, but his effort from distance brushed
the side netting of the goal.
Minutes later, the Uruguayan broke through
the defence. Suarez attempted to drill his shot past Tim Krul, but the
Dutchman’s boot kept out the powerful drive to deny Liverpool the lead.
After the fast paced start, the visitors
grew into the game and limited the Reds. The passing wasn’t as fluid, the
intensity timid.
It played into the hands of Newcastle as
they took the lead on the brink of half time.
Down the right, the menacing Ben Arfa left
Jose Enrique scratching his head with his trickery and crossed towards Cabaye.
The Frenchman controlled on the back post and lashed in an expert volley past
Jones to give the visitors a lead, somewhat against the run of play.
Once again, Liverpool’s inability to
convert chances sent them into half time a goal down.
Red shirts emerged from the tunnel with
Anfield looking for a response. They got exactly that.
The pressure and movement that had eluded
Liverpool’s play, as the first half grew old, was back.
Suarez looked to force the issue again, his
shot on the turn was just tipped past the post by Krul at full stretch.
Sahin in a similar position to Suarez, on
the hour mark, searched for the bottom corner with a low shot, but the
midfielder’s effort trickled the wrong side of the post.
The pressure on the Newcastle goal soon
paid off as Liverpool drew level in the 67th minute. Enrique pumped
a ball forward for Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan controlled it with his chest and
rounded the rushing Krul, leaving him the simplest of finishes into an empty
net.
It was another glimpse of the extraordinary
brilliance of Luis Suarez.
The number 7 was soon at it again.
Pestering the back four, he managed to get away from two defenders, before
squaring to Jonjo Shelvey. The young midfielder was off balance and his effort
reflected that, as it timidly dribbled into the grasp of Krul.
Newcastle’s defenders were having a tough
afternoon dealing with Suarez, the forward slipped Sterling through and the
winger advanced towards goal. Raheem looked certain to give Liverpool the lead,
but Taylor just got back in time to block his goal-bound effort. It was a let
off for the visitors.
Fabricio Coloccini saw red
in the 84th minute. The Argentine’s high tackle with his studs
exposed cynically caught Suarez and left the referee with no decision but to
send him off.
However, Newcastle managed
to hold on for an invaluable point.
Liverpool could’ve and
should’ve got the 3 points.
