Nuri Sahin’s Brace against West Brom in the
Capital One Cup on Wednesday guided Liverpool through to the fourth round with
a 1-2 win at the Hawthorns.
Brendan Rodgers named a largely
inexperienced match day squad ahead of Saturday’s league fixture away to
Norwich, with 16-year-old Jerome Sinclair earning a call up. New signing Samed
Yesil lead the line upfront.
The visitors got off to the worst possible
start, Brad Jones couldn’t hold on to a free-kick directed into the box, allowing
Gabriel Tamas to finish into an empty goal.
With a young side, Rodgers' men dug deep
and clawed their way back into the game. They were soon rewarded courtesy of a
Ben Foster error. The ‘keeper couldn’t keep out Sahin’s drive from distance as
the scores leveled at 1-1.
The second half saw the introduction of
Jerome Sinclair, at 16 years old and 6 days, he is the youngest ever player to
make a senior appearance for Liverpool FC.
Sahin made it 2-1 for The Reds in the 82nd
minute. Spanish midfielder Suso picked up the ball on the half way line and
drove towards the West Brom defence, as they backed off he slipped in Oussama
Assaidi on the left, who in turn squared across the goal for Sahin to score a
tap in.
Liverpool held on to complete a 1-2
comeback and progress to the fourth round of the Capital One Cup, where they’ll
host Rodgers’ former team Swansea City.
