A rampant Liverpool side struck five goals
past Norwich to earn their first win in the league this season. Luis Suarez
repeated last season’s heroics at Carrow Road with another hat trick, Steven
Gerrard and Nuri Sahin also netted in an impressive performance on Saturday
afternoon.
After the midweek victory against West Brom
in the Capital One Cup, Brendan Rodgers recalled his senior stars for the 3pm
kick-off. There were also full league debuts for Suso and Andre Wisdom after
their emergence from the academy set up in recent weeks.
The visitors started brightly and were
instantly ahead courtesy of Luis Suarez. Glen Johnson advanced on the left and
played in Nuri Sahin, the Turk flicked to Suarez on the edge of the box. The
Uruguayan collected and slotted past the stretching Ruddy to give the Reds a
1-0 lead inside the second minute.
Norwich threatened to equalize minutes
later. Pepe Reina scrambled across his line to keep out Simeon Jackson’s shot
at the near post.
Suarez was then denied a stonewall penalty
in the 22nd minute. Leon Barnett brought the striker down, but
referee Mike Jones waved away claims. It’s not the first that Luis has been
denied and certainly won’t be the last. The away fans showed their sense of
humour and broke into chants of “We’re gonna have a party when Suarez gets a
pen”.
The Uruguayan picked himself up and turned
into provider. He brilliantly clipped a ball over the defence for Steven Gerrard.
The Liverpool captain leaped in with his head, but Ruddy was equal to the
effort.
Suarez was then slipped through on goal, but
couldn’t find a finish into the bottom corner one v one against Ruddy, as his effort
diverted wide of the post.
However, seconds later Suarez capitalized
on sloppy play by Michael Turner, dispossessing the defender and then
nutmegging his way through on goal. With the outside of his foot he audaciously
curled his effort past Ruddy.
Half time arrived and the visitors were
clearly the more dominant team. The passing was sharp and the movement was
clever. Brendan Rodgers’ men were on course for their first league win of the
season.
Minutes after the restart, the visitors
added to their tally. Suarez evaded a challenge in the box as he skipped past
Norwich defenders, before his pass aimed for Sterling on the back post was
blocked. The rebound fell back to the Uruguayan, who calmly squared to the oncoming
Sahin, leaving him to guide home from close range.
Suarez’ perseverance paid off soon later.
Norwich defenders terrifyingly backed off the Uruguayan outside of the box,
leaving him to curl his effort past Ruddy. That increased his count to six
goals in three games against Norwich.
The hosts pulled a goal back on the hour
mark courtesy of a Pepe Reina blunder. Russell Martin’s shot was spilled by the
‘keeper into the path of Morison, who converted to deny the Spaniard a clean
sheet.
The scoring didn’t stop there. Gerrard soon
capped it off; his deflected effort wrong footed Ruddy and found the bottom
corner. Sloppy defending then gifted Norwich a second, a momentarily lapse by
Skrtel allowed Grant Holt to neatly finish past Reina.
