Liverpool will take a 1-0 lead back to Anfield for the
second leg of the Europa League qualifiers, after running out victors against
Hearts at Tynecastle Stadium.
Steven Gerrard, Luis Suarez, Glen Johnson and Martin
Skrtel were all rested ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash
with champions Manchester City.
New signing Fabio Borini came the closest to opening
the scoring in the dying minutes of the first half. Raheem Sterling, a constant
thorn in Hearts’ side throughout the game, intercepted a pass on the half way
line and surged into the box, instead of shooting, he squared to Borini, but the
Italian failed to take advantage as his shock struck off the post.
However, the breakthrough came in the 78th minute courtesy of an own goal. Martin Kelly’s searching cross from the right was bundled into his own net by Andy Webster.
The return fixture will be played at Anfield on the 30th
August 2012.
