Liverpool Football Club have confirmed the signing of Real Madrid midfielder Nuri Sahin on a 1-year loan deal fending off interest from Arsenal. He is the fourth signing by Brendan Rodgers following the arrival of Fabio Borini, Joe Allen and Oussama Assaidi.
The transfer saga has taken many a twist and turn. Sahin looked set on a move to Liverpool at first, however, Arsenal swooped in and hijacked the bid. The midfielder was then certain to join Arsenal, but the club could not negotiate terms to their preference, allowing Liverpool to steal a final march and sign the Turk.
Initially, Spanish journalist Guillem Balague revealed that former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso convinced Sahin to move to Anfield.
Prior to his move to Madrid, Sahin played a crucial role in Dortmund’s 2010-11 Bundesliga winning campaign, while also bagging the Player of the Season award. He netted 8 goals and assisted 13 in 40 total appearances.
A series of injuries and fierce competition saw the Turkish international’s chances limited since his switch from Borussia Dortmund to Spanish giants Real Madrid in the summer of 2011.
Nuri Sahin possesses an armoury that allows him to fit into Brendan Rodgers’ system; the playmaker’s attributes include tackling and precise passing. He is also keen to thread through balls to strikers. Sahin’s strengths further to set pieces, direct free kicks in particular.
Below is a short video showcasing Nuri’s talents:
