Luis Suarez fired in his
first Liverpool hat-trick in a dominant 3-0 display against Norwich at Carrow
Road on Saturday afternoon. The hosts offered very little in attack throughout
the 90 minutes as Liverpool stormed to a much needed win ahead of the FA Cup
final against Chelsea next Saturday.
Steven Gerrard returned to
the starting line up after missing last week’s defeat to West Brom. Young
English duo Jonjo Shelvey and Jordan Henderson partnered in midfield, while
Jamie Carragher came in to give Martin Skrtel a rest.
As rain lashed down on the
Carrow Road turf both teams were sloppy during the opening moments. The
slippery surface contributed to players losing their footing, as well as over
and under hitting passes.
Without any clear chances
created up to the 25th minute mark, Steven Gerrard dispossessed
David Fox and released Luis Suarez through on goal with a defence splitting
pass. The Uruguayan finished expertly with his left foot across Ruddy. The
Gerrard and Suarez partnership in full flow, reminiscent of the days of Torres
and our captain.
The number 7 was in the
thick of things again. This time nut megging Elliot Ward and crossing for
Steven Gerrard, who in turn hammered an effort that was bravely blocked by
Elliot Bennett.
Luis Suarez then scored his
second of the match, once again pouncing on sloppy defending from Norwich and
finding the corner of the net from an acute angle.
After the break, Norwich
threatened to score to spark a comeback after David Vaughan’s effort was denied
by an excellent piece of defending from Daniel Agger.
Bennett then went close,
forcing Pepe Reina to save his stinging effort from distance. Bradley Johnson
was next to force a breakthrough, his header just going past the post.
The visitors then settled
themselves and created chances of their own. Jonjo Shelvey headed onto the bar and
then missed an open goal on the stretch after a searching cross by Enrique
across the face of goal.
Stuart Downing went in
search of his first Liverpool league goal, but was denied by Ruddy after he
perplexed a Norwich defender and shot across the face of goal.
After being heavily involved
all game, Luis Suarez presented himself with a golden opportunity to bag his 3rd
of the evening. He once again nutmegged Johnson, but as he was through on goal,
the Uruguayan striker chose to chip Ruddy, but got to much on it as it flew
over the bar. Sliding past the ‘keeper would’ve been the better option.
But the front man made up
for his miss and scored a truly spectacular goal to get his first hat trick in
a Liverpool shirt. Picking the
ball up on the half way line, he attempted an audacious chip from 45 yards out
that looped over Ruddy and nestled into the back of the net. It sent the
travelling fans into delirium. Carrow Road was silent. Kenny Dalglish’s arms
perched in the air with his trademark celebration.
Charlie Adam dubbed it the
“Goal of the season”. It’s hard to disagree with him.
It wasn’t too Xabi, was it?...
We’ll all continue to watch
the goal for years to come. We’ll never tire of it. We will cherish it. Luis
Suarez, take a bow.
MOTM: Luis Suarez
Is that an actual question
to ask? By a long shot. His partnership with Gerrard seems to be flourishing
with the number 8 playing just off the Uruguayan. He was constantly involved
within play all afternoon and deserved his three goals. Just a small glimpse of
what he’s made of.
