Liverpool stormed through to the quarterfinals of the FA Cup with a comprehensive 6-1 victory against Brighton on Sunday afternoon. Goals from Martin Skrtel, Andy Carroll, Luis Suarez, and a hat trick of own goals set up a home tie against Stoke City in the next round.

There were three changes to the Liverpool side that went down in defeat last week at Old Trafford. Andy Carroll, Charlie Adam and Jamie Carragher came in for Jay Spearing, Daniel Agger and Dirk Kuyt.

It didn’t take long for the hosts to open the scoring. Martin Skrtel glanced in a teasing corner in the 5th minute.

After the early goal Liverpool would’ve been expected to cruise home, but Brighton struck level in the 17th minute through a superb free kick from Kazenga LuaLua.

Excited by the prospect of a cup upset, the travelling away fans were in full voice.

However, it was Liverpool who looked the most likely out of the two teams to take the lead.

After a quite start to the game, Luis Suarez suddenly burst into life, combining with Stewart Downing with a clever one two, but the winger couldn’t direct his effort on target. The Uruguayan then conjured chances of his own. Firstly skipping through the box before being denied by a last ditch tackle, shooting wide from distance and then having an attempt cleared off the line.

Carroll was next to try to give the hosts the lead. The towering number 9 met Steven Gerrard’s cross, but his header could only find the roof of the net.

However, Liverpool struck on the verge of half time. Bridcutt was unlucky to see Glen Johnson’s header cleared off the line and rebound off him into the net.

The Reds continued the second half as they finished the first. And in the 57th minute further increased their advantage. Stewart Downing set up Andy Carroll with a low cross, who in-turn converted clinically on the turn. The winger notching his first assist in a Liverpool shirt.

Bridcutt then found the back of the net, but once again for Liverpool. Brezovan kept out Steven Gerrard’s initial attempt, but the captain’s follow up was deflected in off the helpless Bridcutt.

The Brighton defence was then, not for the first time, left embarrassed when Dunk converted into his own net after audaciously trying to clear his lines with kick ups.

Referee Andre Marriner awarded Liverpool a penalty in the late stages after Dirk Kuyt was bundled down. Kenny Dalglish gestured “Number 7” with his fingers from the touchline, indicating that Luis Suarez should take over the penalty duty. But it was not to be in the script. Brezovan dived to his left and denied the Uruguayan’s poor penalty.

Suarez shortly made up his penalty miss by heading in from close range, after Andy Carroll nodded Jose Enrique’s cross back across goal.
