| Dirk Kuyt firing in his 50th Liverpool goal |
Liverpool ended Manchester United’s FA Cup campaign, with a 2-1 win at Anfield. Goals from Daniel Agger and Dirk Kuyt were enough to leave Manchester feeling glum after the Reds dumped United’s neighbours, Manchester City, out of the Carling Cup semi-final three days earlier.
Events in recent months had set this tie up to be a feisty encounter, and it was just that, with both sets of fans in full voice during an emotional afternoon.
Alex Ferguson did not hesitate in naming Patrice Evra in the starting line up, whereas Luis Suarez was on looking from the sidelines continuing his 8-match ban.
The visitors had a host of their players on the injury list, Nani, Vidic and Rooney all missing out, while Kenny Dalglish opted to play birthday boy Jamie Carragher in midfield and rest Craig Bellamy after his Manchester City heroics.
Daniel Agger converted Steven Gerrard’s corner in the 21st minute. United ‘keeper De Gea was under immense pressure by Andy Carroll, causing him to misjudge his clearance.
Ji-Sung Park replied shortly before half time, Rafael dispossessed Jose Enrique and swung in a low cross for the South Korean to thump in.
The tie seemed to be heading to a replay at Old Trafford, until the 88th minute. An Andy Carroll flick on released Dirk Kuyt through on goal to strike past DeGea. A timely fixture to get back on to the score sheet
Kenny Dalglish's men will found out who awaits in the 5th round on Sunday.
