Steven Gerrard celebrates after converting his penalty

Liverpool will return to Anfield for the second leg of the Carling Cup semi final with a one-goal advantage after a 1-0 victory against Manchester City.

The hosts were without regular first teamers. Vincent Kompany, starting his 4 match ban, David Silva through injury, as well as Kolo and Yaya Toure, the brothers away on international duty for the African Cup Of Nations.

Meanwhile, the visitors returned to full strength after the Oldham victory on Friday. With Agger, Skrtel, Carroll and Downing all returning. There was also a surprise inclusion for Martin Kelly, a regular starter in the Carling Cup, as Glen Johnson was deployed at left back.

Liverpool shared the bulk of possession in the opening minutes, Joe Hart denying the seven time winners on three occasions. Firstly, Andy Carroll fended off Stefan Savic to get a shot away, but the England international was equal to the effort. He then tipped Steven Gerrard’s long-range effort past the post, as it seemed to be nestling in to the bottom corner. Man City’s stopper then kept out Stewart Downing’s deflected volley, instinctively diving to his right.

However, Steven Gerrard’s 13th minute penalty beat Joe Hart and was the difference between the two teams.

The Reds shut up shop and congested the defence late on to ensure their lead, progressing to the second leg, on the 25th January, with a priceless one-goal advantage.

MOTM: Glen Johnson

Every player played their part, but Glen Johnson in particular was outstanding. In his less natural left back position, he once again showed his versatility, making crucial tackles throughout the game.
