Luis Suarez’s strike was the difference as Liverpool over came newly promoted Queens Park Rangers with a dominant 1-0 victory.
The result ended 4 consecutive home draws for The Reds, propelling them to 6th in the league table.
With Jay Spearing suspended, Kenny Dalglish shuffled the midfield, deploying Jordan Henderson into his natural central role and bringing in Stewart Downing and Maxi Rodriguez for Craig Bellamy. Dirk Kuyt also found himself back in the starting eleven, replacing Andy Carroll.
Fresh off a defeat at Craven Cottage Liverpool were quick out the blocks on a cold Saturday afternoon, stamping their dominance with three corners inside three minutes.
The early pressure was almost rewarded on the 10-minute mark, Suarez met Downing’s teasing cross, but the Uruguayans header was straight at goalkeeper Cerny.
The 24 year old was at the focal point of Liverpool’s attack again, this time linking up with Dirk Kuyt. However, his effort from an outrageous angle was never troubling the keeper.
Suarez once again failed to take advantage of an opening, this time latching onto Maxi Rodriguez’s pass and flashing his shot way wide of the target into the Anfield road end.
There was a case of de-ja vu around Anfield, the familiar sight of the home team’s dominance but nothing to show for it in the goals column.
Next up to try and force a break through was Maxi Rodriguez. Dirk Kuyt’s precise through ball found the Argentine clear one on one with Cery but his low effort was expertly saved from goalkeeper.
41 minutes had passed and the visitors finally amassed their first shot. Shaun Wright-Phillips watched as his audacious strike from long range sailed into the Kop.
Liverpool continued exerting pressure onto the QPR goal. This time Downing slipped Suarez through on goal, the 24 year old tried to chip the on coming ‘keeper. But the Czech stood tall and rebounded the shot back into the path of the Uruguayan, who flashed his second effort high and wide. A square ball to Kuyt seemed the better option.
The half time whistle blew as Downing had the last shot of the period. The winger created space for himself on the edge of the area, and drilled his strike into the clutches of Cerny’s palms.
The earlier onslaught on the QPR goal continued into the second half.
This time the Reds made it count. Charlie Adam found an unmarked Suarez with a delightful cross, leaving the forward with the simple task of heading home from 5 yards. The No.7’s first Premier League goal since October 1st.
Kuyt, in pursuit of his 50th Premier League goal, dragged a shot wide shortly after. Followed by an instinctive save from ‘keeper Cerny after Maxi Rodriguez seemed to have wrong footed the 37 year old.
The second half followed the pattern of the first. The hosts were dominant in possession, leaving the visitors pegged back in their own half.
An exchange of passes from Suarez and Maxi on the edge of the area allowed the No.11 to spring clear and get a shot away on target. But was once again kept out by the ex Tottenham goalkeeper. On another day the winger would’ve got a hat trick.
As the home fans have seen all season, the visiting goalkeeper produced one of the games of his career.
QPR never proposed a threat on the Liverpool throughout the afternoon, but were nearly level after Jay Bothroyd glanced a free-kick over with his heel.
There was an air of anxiety amongst the home fans as the game reached its climax. QPR seemed to finally offer something, although it was a case of too little to late.
In the closing stages Wright-Phillips deflected a Bellamy cross onto the underside of the bar, yet another occasion the woodwork denying the Reds. However, Kenny Dalglish’s men held on to march onto a 1-0 victory.
MOTM: Charlie Adam. The birthday boy put in a solid shift in the centre of midfield, filling in for both Lucas and Spearing. It was his pinpoint cross onto Luis Suarez’s head that gave Liverpool the crucial lead. He looked assured in both halves of the pitch, breaking down QPR’s advancing players and picking out team mates in the opposite end of the pitch.
